Groovify 80's Mobile Music App
Project Overview
Groovify is a mobile music app that transports users back to the classics of the 80’s.
It allows users to interact with friends, share their favourite tracks and even learn how to DJ, right from the comfort of their home!
The Problem
80’s music is an era that is much loved by many. This app allows users to have the greatest classics at their fingertips and be able to share their most loved music with others.
The Solution
Design an app that gives users access to 80’s classics by offering them the following key features:
- Search for all of the classics that the 80’s has to offer
- Add friends and share favourite tracks/playlists
- Easy listening day by day recommendations
- Tailors songs to your listening preferences
- Chat to friends and listen to what they’re loving
- Upgrade and trial being a DJ right from home
The Design Process
We adopted the Design Thinking Process, in order to a develop a user-centric solution to the problem.
Discover
Competitive Analysis
In the discovery phase, we undertook a competitive analysis of three competitor music player apps on the market (Spotify, SoundCloud and MixCloud), to better understand the market. We looked at each app’s design principles and patterns, to see what would be successful for our app.
Some of the things we loved from each app were:
Ideate
During the ideate phase, we went on to digitally sketch our initial wireframes using the Mockup app. This allowed us to map out the user journey, for each of the tasks we wanted users to be able to accomplish with our app.
Initial Sketch Wireframing
Design
During the design phase, we went on to create high fidelity wireframes in Figma.

Reflection
As this was our first project, there was a lot to learn and improve upon. We would try to stick to only two basic sets of simpler font, next time, so the design is less cluttered and a pleasure to navigate.
We enjoyed the early prototyping for this app, as it gave us a sold understanding of the features we wanted to include for our users.
If we had more time, we would have definitely implemented some user research into our development process and iterated our design to ensure it was successful across all groups.
